There are nine ways to locate family literacy projects:


1. Program Name - the specific name of a project. (Example:Significant Others as Reading Partners)
2. Organization Name - primary sponsor or partner in a project. (Example: Sacred Heart Elementary School)
3. Language - a listing of projects by the language in day-to-day operations.
4. Age of Child - the child age group predominantly served in the project.
5. Setting - type of setting in which a project operates. (Example: library)
6. City - the city in which a project is located.
7. Location - the province in which family literacy projects are found.
8. Prototype Model - This refers to eleven distinct family literacy program frameworks which have been recognized as exemplary and which formed the basis of many later community-based adaptations.
9. Category of Family Literacy Activity - Six different types of program activity have been identified from the literature on family literacy. Projects in the Directory have been classified according family literacy type (Ex. parent involvement, practitioner training), based on the main goals of a program.
